Cataract Surgery:

When the natural lens in the eye becomes cloudy, usually due to normal aging changes, it can be replaced surgically with a lens implant. Cataract surgery is also an opportunity to address other eye problems such as dry eye and astigmatism, and to consider simultaneous stenting or combined laser treatment for glaucoma.

Standard Cataract Surgery

Sometimes the blurred vision is overlooked and the cataract neglected, whether due to fear of surgery, financial reasons, or just getting used to it. In some cases, a cataract progresses so slowly that the associated blurred vision does not become noticeable until it is far advanced. Such advanced cataracts are typically handled by removal and replacement with a "standard" lens implant, hoping to restore vision with glasses similar to what was used before the cataract developed.

Refractive Cataract Surgery

For most people, the decrease in vision becomes a problem before the cataract is fully developed. In such cases, there is the opportunity to target an even better quality of vision, by treating astigmatism and restoring more natural distance and/or near vision than was present before the cataract became apparent. Cataract Surgery which takes into account all these factors is called Refractive. That’s what I would recommend in most cases.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Occasionally we encounter someone who has such a high degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism that their quality of vision would be vastly improved by lens replacement, even when no cataract is present. Such surgery is typically not covered by insurance policies, so it can become quite expensive.

Cataract Surgery Cost

Standard cataract surgery is usually covered by insurance, although co-pays and deductibles apply. Refractive cataract surgery will cost more, but for most people is well worth it. Refractive lens exchange costs much more, all out-of-pocket. Costs vary depending on which lens implant is needed. We welcome frank financial discussions at the time when surgery is being planned.

Glaucoma Care:

The treatment of glaucoma involves lowering the pressure inside the eye when it is high enough to damage the optic nerve. Nerve damage due to pressure can eventually result in loss of vision. Treatment options include prescription medication eyedrops, office-based SLT laser treatment, and in more severe cases, surgery.

Vision Care:

We also provide comprehensive eye care, including screening for Cataract, glaucoma, dry, blepharitis, allergy, medication side effects And other disorders of vision and other disorders of vision.

Urgent Eye Care:

Although night and weekend eye emergencies are handled in the hospital emergency department, some less urgent problems can wait until clinic hours to be seen. If you are experiencing foreign body sensation, eye pain, light sensitivity, recent flashes and floaters, or sudden loss of vision, we can frequently work in urgent cases during regular hours.

Telehealth:

For less urgent problems such as minor infections, irritations, and red eye, teleconferencing or a virtual visit may be the safest, most convenient way to determine whether or not you need to make an appointment. If you are an established patient with a less serious problem, call for more information, especially if it may be risky or difficult for you to be seen in person.
